No clue where to start
So I know that I probably sound pathetic, but I have absolutely no idea where to start. See I'm still in college for another year and my fiance and I aren't planning on getting married until 2013 so I have a year to get my feet under me. We're thinking about the last weekend in May or first weekend in June so it'll be nice weather, however I am VERY uneasy about anything completely outdoors due to weather changing so much. We just started making a very messy guest list and somewhat ideas on receptions, but I feel like I have an idea in my head and I'm not finding anything to go with that idea. I'm not a glamor girl who wants sparkles, glitter and all the above but I want something that is memorable, makes everyone go "wow" and "this is them." We live in Syracuse NY and we were hoping to stay somewhat close to home with everything. We want if we can to pay for as much as we can so then any other money we get from mine/his family we can put towards not just the wedding but honeymoon, house, etc. I've thought about places near lakes and I love how scenic it is for pictures, I've thought about hotels that are very nice as well and I have thought about even just a very nice banquet hall and going someplace for pictures between the wedding and reception. We have however put a lot on hold I guess you could say because of how far off it is and how all over the place I am hahaha! If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it and please don't hesitate to tell me I'm going nuts :) Thanks a ton everyone!

Beginning with arrivals and cocktails, and the formal introductions and entrance music, Paduano Studios (P.S.) will work with you to choose the right combination of music and entertainment. When it’s time for dinner, cutting the cake, and taking a spin on the dance floor, the P.S. team will work directly with you to design the musical memories of a lifetime.
Our baseline wedding entertainment packages include a two-person team, four hours of continuous music, and a music library containing thousands of songs to choose from. We’ll work with you to design a package that’s right for you, and that includes everything you’re looking for. And if you’re not sure what you want…that’s okay too! We have lots of experience and ideas to draw on and we’ll walk through the process with you.

Hi,
First off, Congratulations!!
Planning a wedding isn't easy and sometimes it can be downright frustrating.
The basics you should start out with are the "where and when" you are going to have your ceremony and reception. A lot of venues (banquet facilities) offer areas for outdoor ceremonies (or indoors if the weather is uncooperative).
They (banquet halls & churches) usually book way in advance so you would want to book your ceremony & reception venues first. Next, you'll want to book your entertainment (DJ) and your photographer or videographer if you decide to have video of your event. The flowers and cake usually get booked in advance as well (the sooner, the better). When it comes to shopping for all those things you should take into consideration what each vendor has to offer. Vendors should be more than willing to meet with you as many times as necessary to make sure that everything is exactly the way you want it. Remember one thing when looking for your vendors, the longer you wait to book them, the fewer options you will have. Congratulations and good luck!!

Thanks girls! I actually called my church today to set the date with them and I'm calling tomorrow to see if my fiance and I can go look at the place were hoping to have our reception sometime soon. We have started working on a guest list and I think we have a good idea of how many people we're going to have. I know the list will change a little bit, but not that drastically see we only want close family and friends there. I've found numerous items, websites, magazines, etc that are really helping since I'm such an organizer. I can't wait to really get things moving :)

You are definitely not sounding pathetic or nuts. Like Jamie says below, you will want to start looking before businesses book up for the wedding season. I may recommend my wedding venue, Greystone Castle. It's such a cute wedding reception site and may fit your idea of something memorable and personal. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
Best of luck and congratulations!

I do not think you are going nuts at all. You will find alot of vendors book up a year and half to two years ahead of time. So it is definitely not too early to start thinking of all these things. We just got married this past April and had a year and half to plan and all I can say it was definitely not too long! I would highly recommend going to the bridals shows- you can get some good ideas as well as some vendors offer discounts you can only get by going to the shows. The venue for the reception is important and being on the water for pictures was a thought but most places seem to be pricer on the water. We chose a venue not on the water but in between the ceremony and reception we had pictures done at places on the water so we had the best of both worlds. A great place to look at for reception is the Empire Room at the fairgrounds its really nice inside. Another nice place is Borios or Lakeshore Yauht and Country Club-but they are pricey a little.
Let me know if there is any other questions you have - I do party planning on the side.
